This course offers a comprehensive exploration of the historical evolution of mathematical ideas, methods, and notations from ancient to at least Arabic-Islamic times. It examines mathematics as both a scientific and cultural enterprise, highlighting how different civilizations—such as Egyptian, Babylonian, Greek, , and Arabic-Islamic—contributed to its conceptual development.
Students will analyze original mathematical texts, reconstruct ancient procedures, and reflect on the social and educational contexts that shaped mathematical reasoning through the ages.
