This course teaches a method rather than a body of facts: identify the hazards of a machine or an installation, assess the risk, and reduce it in a fixed order of priority — first by design, then by safeguarding, and only last by information for use.
It is organised in five chapters over fifteen weeks. Chapter 1 situates machinery safety in its legal and normative framework, and distinguishes what the law requires from what a standard recommends. Chapter 2 fixes the vocabulary of ISO 12100, whose terms are not synonyms and whose confusion produces wrong assessments. Chapter 3 moves from the machine to the installation: process hazards, layout and safety zones, layers of protection, and major-hazard sites. Chapter 4 is the technical core, and the only chapter in which you will calculate: safety distances, positioning of protective devices, guards, interlocking devices and emergency stop. Chapter 5 deals with the case where safety itself depends on a control system: Performance Level, Safety Integrity Level, and the life cycle of a safety instrumented system.
On completion you will be able to conduct a documented risk assessment on an unfamiliar machine, calculate and justify a safety distance, select an appropriate safeguard and state its limits, and read a safety-related control architecture — justifying each choice against a named standard.
Assessment. Continuous assessment 40 %, final examination 60 %. The continuous part comprises three graded tutorial submissions, two chapter tests, and one risk assessment report on a real machine, carried out in pairs.
